What is your name, and where do you live?
Audrey, The Creator-Collector, Cape May, NJ
What is the title, who is the creator, and where did you purchase it?
Large Bowl "Surf", Susan Fox Hirschmann, Carriage House Gift Shop, Cape May.
What first drew you to the item and has that sentiment changed in any way?
Susan is a great friend, always upbeat, and I really wanted something useful for myself from her current collection. The first time I met Susan was at Art Space in West Cape May. This petite woman grabbed me by the hand when I walked in, and though the space is only 3 small rooms, took me on a personal tour, talking about her art the entire time. Wow! I was smitten right then, by her enthusiasm for her craft and her salesmanship. I ended up buying a small dish from her at that show, as a gift for my stepmother. It was about 6 inches square, and had a design of sea turtles and waves carved into it, and the colors were turquiose, greens, and blues on a cream base. I made sure to sign up for Susan's mailing list, and have followed her on Facebook and kept up in person also. She was one of the first artists I invited into the Carriage House Gift Shop at Cape May MAC. That was a good decision...her pottery typically sells out, and MAC gets a nice commission. I love this bowl. It reminds me each time of Susan's warmth and friendliness.

Susan's mark typically is found on the bottom of her pottery Does this item fit with other parts of your collection, or is it different for you?
All of the other dishes in my kitchen are white, or off-white, so this is quite a departure. I was drawn by the richness and depth of the colors, and I appreciate the way that Susan carves by hand the shapes that make the patterns. Her attention to detail is amazing!

Side detail of "Surf" Bowl, by Susan Fox Hirschmann Where do you display or use it?
It either sits on the counter or sideboard in our kitchen to hold produce or I use it to collect the daily harvest in our garden. It was kind of pricey up front, so I'll be upset if I drop it outside and it breaks, but what's the point of having things so precious that you don't enjoy them? Life is short, and it's beautiful. Small things make it that much sweeter.

Many tomatoes were collected this past season with the help of this bowl
