What is your name, and where do you live?
Audrey, Cape May, New Jersey
What is the title, who is the creator, and where did you purchase it?
Seagull, Mary Stewart, Carriage House Gift Shop at the Emlen Physick Estate.
What first drew you to the item and has that sentiment changed in any way?
I like the simplicity of it. A lot of the subject is negative space, with little detail, and the texture is predominantly in the background. The shadow of the bird on the sand is perfectly placed, to give the piece a slight touch of realism and punch of life. It's a fairly recent addition, so it's still new to me.
Mary has for a long time been associated with Cape May MAC, and I like to support the artists who are represented in MAC's shops. Mary has worn many hats with MAC, and has an outside business that she runs with a partner as well.
Does this item fit with other parts of your collection, or is it different for you?
I don't usually collect watercolors, as I prefer saturated, bright colors, and I had the impression that most of this medium features muted color schemes. I no longer think that is true. Watercolorists are using new techniques all the time, and utilizing multiple layers of paint to build up strongly pigmented areas in their artwork. I think that as watercolorists have changed, so has my appreciation for the medium. Seagull, however, is a simple color scheme, and the opposite of what I usually collect. Regardless, this little guy makes me think of happy beach days, so in the dead of winter or on rainy summer days he lifts my spirits for sure.
Where do you display or use it?
It came in a white mat. I had an old silvertone metal frame that it fit in, and it sits inside a large bookcase in our living room, near some duck decoys and figurines, collected knicknacks, albums, games and books.
