Scallops can and do swim short distances at a time, using their oversize muscle to open and close their rather flat shell to force water through in a way to propel themselves forward. I exaggerated the stream of water coming out of this scallop’s shell to illustrate movement, and added a crisp shadow below to indicate its position above the ocean floor.
I chose to paint a scallop because of its prime contribution to Cape May’s local economy, followed by squid, mackerel & butterfish. Our across the street neighbor is a scalloper, and operates Scallop Shack Farms in the Cape May County airport complex.
