I like to paint these gentle but immensely resilient insects every year, when I see a lot of them while I'm on the beach or working in my garden.  Each version is different, just like each butterfly is unique.  Here I took a little influence from Henri Rousseau in my handling of the plants.  Also, Cape May has had so much rain late this summer I really wanted to vary my greens and suggest overcast skies.  The slightly wrinkled wings on the butterfly suggest that it has recently emerged from its chrysalis, and perhaps it will make its long journey soon.
