RECKONING

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. day, I'd like to not talk about a single collected artwork, but take a few moments to highlight a wonderful coffee table book about African American expression through incredible works of art.

RECKONING. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history and current events.
RECKONING. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history and current events.

  • What is your name, and where do you live?

    Audrey, Cape May, NJ.

  • What is the title, who is the creator, and where did you purchase it?

RECKONING: PROTEST. DEFIANCE. RESILIENCE. is a book published by RizzoliElecta that I brought into the Carriage House Gift Shop at Cape May MAC last season. I think it's a wonderful addition to anyone's home, local library, or area museum.

  • What first drew you to the item and has that sentiment changed in any way?

Part history, part art, this book explores African American artistic expression depicting the struggle to overcome inequality, the acts that spark change, and the journey to heal. The book is a lasting memento of an ongoing exhibition presented by the National Museum of African American History and Culture, part of the Smithsonian, and features vivid full-page photography, minimal commentary, views of the installed exhibition, and a spectacular illustrated index at the end of the volume.

I have not changed my feelings about it in any way. I think the subject is of the utmost importance. I also believe that if more people flipped through this book or attended this exhibition, racism could be weakened.

  • Does this item fit with other parts of your collection, or is it different for you?

I do usually purchase books when attending exhibitions at museums that I really enjoy. I have not, however, been to this exhibition.

  • Where do you display or use it?

This is in our living room, on shelves that hold various treasures. I have found that I look through it more frequently when certain events are reported on the national news.
